Lloyd Dobler Gallery is pleased to present the opening of its Fall 2008 gallery season with a solo exhibition from Chicago artist, Autumn Ramsey. This self-titled exhibition will showcase recent paintings by the artist.
Ramsey's work utilizes pictorial structure and metaphor as a way of translating highly personal content into images that are accessible to a broad audience. While her paintings represent complex and ambivalent subjects, her work is also humorous and often avoids explicit meaning in favor of a lively play of interpretations. For example, in Untitled, a self-portrait of the artist from 2008, it's uncertain whether her face is obscured so that we focus on the eyes as she's lost in moment of thought or whether it is meant as a joke, the artist with "mud" on her face. Simultaneously earnest and absurd, Ramsey's practice ultimately locates itself in an uncertainty that preserves her subjects' autonomy.
Autumn Ramsey lives and works in Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005.
